Traka Gravel Girona – Recap

El pasado 21 y 22 de septiembre tuvo lugar la primera carrera gravel por etapas de Europa y tuvimos la oportunidad de estar presentes, no tan solo como media partner oficial del evento, sino también colocándonos un dorsal y compitiendo durante dos días contra corredores de todos los niveles.

La carrera tenía lugar en la ciudad de Girona, famosa por ser un auténtico paraíso ciclista por distintas razones, entre ellas, la localización, el buen clima y los kilómetros y kilómetros de carreteras secundarias, montañas y naturaleza a su alrededor que permiten practicar cualquier modalidad de este y otros deportes.

Tanto el recorrido del sábado como el del domingo tenían como punto de salida y de llegada el corazón de la capital gironina, más concretamente el Parc de la Devesa.

Los organizadores prepararon dos rutas exigentes en la que combinaban zonas montañosas y también zonas rápidas donde se podía pedalear a grandes velocidades, eso sí, siempre rodeados de naturaleza y bonitos paisajes que transcurrían por pistas y senderos espectaculares.

Para esta primera edición tuvimos como gran protagonista la meteorología, que estuvo amenazando con tormentas torrenciales durante todo el fin de semana, en especial, el sábado. Es por ello que, la organización, por motivos de seguridad decidió acortar el recorrido del sábado y proponer un track alternativo, más corto, pero con el mismo desnivel.

A pesar de que la lluvia tuvo presencia, los peores pronósticos no se acabaron de cumplir y finalmente la prueba se llevó a cabo sin ningún inconveniente, nada más lejos que agua, barro y un terreno perfecto para disfrutar de auténtico ambiente gravel.

Respecto a Klassmark, la organización, cabe decir que consiguieron hacer realidad otra gran prueba deportiva pese a los contratiempos provocados por el clima y dejaron claro (una vez más) que el gravel forma parte de su programa principal y que van a seguir apostando por ello con competiciones como Sa Costa Brava o La Santa Vall en sus próximas ediciones y, como no, a partir de ahora también Traka Girona.

Last weekend, on September the 21st and the 22nd, the first-ever gravel stage race of Europe took place, and we had the chance to be present, not only as the official media partner but also taking part of the race with a bib number on, racing during two days with people of varied fitness level.

The race was held in Girona, a city well-known as a cycling paradise for many reasons, like the location, the weather and the number of kilometers and kilometers of back roads and mountains that allow people to practice any cycling discipline and also other sports.

Both tracks, Saturday and Sunday, had the same start point and finish line in the heart of the Catalan city, La Devesa Park.

The organizers prepared two demanding routes combining hilly areas with flat segments where riders were able to enjoy climbing but also ride at high speed, always surrounded by nature and beautiful landscapes while riding through spectacular single-tracks.

For this first edition, the weather was one of the main characters present in the race, with torrential storms forecasted during the whole weekend, especially on Saturday. This is why the organization, because of safety reasons, decided to shorten Saturday’s track and plan an alternative one, with fewer kilometers but the same elevation gain.

Despite the rain was present, the worst forecasts were not met and thankfully the event took place as scheduled with only a few raindrops, which led to a perfectly muddy terrain to enjoy an authentic gravel atmosphere.

As regards Klassmark, the organizers, it is worth to say that they succeeded in making another amazing sport competition a reality despite facing inclement water, and they made sure, once again, that gravel plays an important role in their portfolio of races, and they are going to continue betting on this cycling discipline with events like Sa Costa Brava or La Santa Vall, and now also with Traka Girona.
