The Traka 2022: Otro evento impecable de Klassmark

Por si aún había dudas, The Traka se confirmó el pasado fin de semana como uno de los eventos gravel de referencia del continente. La calidad de los eventos que organiza Klassmark, el éxito que les precede y los valores que transmiten, han posicionado a sus carreras en lo más alto de la escena gravel.

Una nueva edición de The Traka ha finalizado con 800 participantes procedentes de más de 35 diferentes nacionalidades y una organización de diez, dando como resultado dos días llenos de emoción por territorio gironí.

Tras dos años limitados por la pandemia, uno podía sentir la expectación por este evento entre participantes y dotwatchers. En The Traka se juntaron ciclistas aficionados, jóvenes con un gran potencial en búsqueda de reconocimiento, y ciclistas ex profesionales con la intención de encontrar en el gravel un ciclismo más de aventura.

El lado competitivo

El nivel de los nombres que coparon las primeras posiciones en las distintas distancias y disciplinas habla por sí mismo, y con una simple ojeada a la hoja de resultados uno puede ver la variedad de perfiles que tomaron partida en Girona.

En The Traka 360 vimos por primera vez el esperado duelo entre Mattia de Marchi y Lachlan Morton, que no tardaron en avanzarse al resto y compartieron cabeza de carrera hasta que el corredor del EF Education – EasyPost rompió su sillín. Hizo un apaño y perdió unos valiosos minutos, pero logró cruzar la línea de meta en segunda posición.

Por segundo año consecutivo el italiano del Enough CC fue el vencedor, y la leyenda local Tomi Misser redondeó el podio. El catalán batió al sprint a Diederik Delen y Ulrich Bartholmoes. Tras 18h y 30 minutos, Marion Dziwnik cruzó la línea de meta para proclamarse la ganadora en categoría femenina, aventajando en más de una hora a Alba Xandri y Virginia Cancellieri.

En la distancia de 200 km, la catalana Lydia Iglesias resistió la presión de la debutante en gravel Maria Vittoria Sperotto, segunda, y la islandesa Maria Gudmundsdottir. En categoría masculina, un grupo de siete corredores se destacó desde el inicio, y entre ellos se jugaron la victoria. El neerlandés Ivar Slik batió al sprint a su compatriota Piotr Havik, con el suizo Konny Looser justo por detrás.

Acerca de Klassmark

Detrás de la marca Klassmark encontramos a un pequeño equipo humano que se encarga de hacer girar los engranajes de todos los proyectos que salen de la empresa organizadora de eventos. Un grupo enérgico y dispuesto a hacer las cosas de forma diferente, con unos valores claros y el máximo respeto hacia el medioambiente.

Al frente de este equipo encontramos a Gerard Freixes, un auténtico amante de la naturaleza y el deporte. Tras unos años dedicándose de forma profesional al snowboard, Gerard se vió forzado a buscar una alternativa a su carrera profesional debido a una importante lesión.

Su mujer Cris y él decidieron volver a Girona y probar suerte organizando eventos relacionados con el deporte. Poco a poco el proyecto fue tomando forma y de ahí nació lo que hoy conocemos como Klassmark. Los eventos que organizaban en sus inicios nada tienen que ver con su actual calendario de carreras. Donde antes había eventos de motocross, ahora hay eventos de ciclismo o runnig con cero impacto medioambiental.

No nature, no future

Uno de los motivos que diferencia a Klassmark del resto de organizadores es por sus valores y su lucha constante contra el deterioro del territorio y el cambio climático.

Su lema No nature, no future es mucho más que cuatro palabras. La desaparición progresiva de la vida rural, el incremento del turismo, y otros muchos factores perjudiciales para la naturaleza, han hecho que Gerard y su equipo se pongan manos a la obra para intentar frenar esta tendencia con las herramientas que tienen a su alcance.

Hemos visto a Klassmark organizar innumerables recogidas de residuos por diferentes puntos del territorio o reivindicar el respeto a la naturaleza a través de acciones puntuales a en redes sociales, pero sus valores van más allá y también los trasladan a todas las carreras que organizan.

“Tenemos que transmitir a la gente el privilegio que es poder utilizar el medioambiente para nuestro ocio.”

En esta edición de The Traka, la organización ha logrado contrarrestar la huella de emisiones de carbono producida tanto por el evento en sí como la de todas las personas que participaron de unamanera u otra.

Pequeños gestos como entregar camisetas de algodón orgánico, eliminar envases de un solo uso, instalar fuentes en lugar de entregar botellas de plástico, o apostar por proveedores locales, hacen que el medioambiente no se vea afectado negativamente por la existencia de eventos como este. Como ellos dicen, “la única huella que estos eventos quieren dejar es la del recuerdo de todos sus participantes”.

Tanto de cara al público como de forma interna, todo en Klassmark se hace pensando en la naturaleza. Han renunciado a patrocinadores por no estar alineados con su visión, y seguirán tomando las medidas necesarias con tal de minimizar su impacto en el entorno.

Gerard menciona la responsabilidad que tenemos los practicantes del ocio en exteriores de mantener la esencia de la naturaleza. “Cuando de pequeño iba de excursión fuera de la ciudad te encontrabas a gente trabajando en el campo. Donde había una masía ahora hay una casa de turismo rural”, nos comenta con resignación.

Si bien hay causas que ni él ni Klassmark pueden remediar, a la hora de tomar decisiones, la empresa catalana se basa en qué es lo mejor para el presente y futuro del entorno. No nature, no future es su lema, y son fieles a él.

A corto plazo tienen la intención de reducir el número de eventos de su calendario, priorizando la calidad a la cantidad. No desean masificar ninguno de los eventos que decidan mantener, y quieren persuadir a los participantes a priorizar la conexión con la naturaleza.

“Si algún día vemos que una de nuestras carreras se profesionaliza en exceso, pasaremos a cronometrar únicamente algunos sectores para intentar mantener la esencia del espíritu aventurero.”

Embajadores de la tierra

En los últimos meses supimos de la noticia de que Ranxo, una de las carreras que Klassmark organiza, fue seleccionada para ser parte de las UCI Gravel World Series, cuyo calendario contará en su primer año con 12 eventos de gravel de todo el mundo.

El motivo principal del interés por organizar una carrera en colaboración con la UCI es poder reivindicar y mostrar al mundo el potencial que tiene Lleida. Mientras que ni Girona ni The Traka necesitan una mayor exposición mediática dado que toda la comunidad ciclista es ya conocedora de sus virtudes, Lleida, situada también en Cataluña, es un territorio con un sinfín de opciones para ciclistas por descubrir.

Según nos comenta Gerard, existen varias diferencias entre el gravel que podemos practicar en un sitio y otro. “El gravel en Lleida es mucho más remoto. Sientes que no hay nada a tu alrededor”. En cambio la gran mayoría de pistas de gravel por la zona de Girona se sitúan cerca de ciudades o pueblos, por lo que es difícil ver paisajes como aquellos que caracterizan a la zona central de los Estados Unidos, por ejemplo.

Ranxo es el próximo evento de gravel en el calendario de Klassmark, y teniendo en cuenta el saber hacer de los organizadores y lo que conlleva ser parte de las UCI Gravel World Series, todos tenemos ya expectantes por ver qué nos depara esta carrera.

In case there were still any doubts, The Traka was reaffirmed last weekend as one of the leading gravel events on the continent. The quality of the events organized by Klassmark, the success that precedes them and the values they share, have positioned their races at the top of the gravel scene.

A new edition of The Traka has ended with 800 participants from more than 35 different nationalities and a flawless organization, resulting in two days full of emotion in the Girona region.

After two years constrained by the pandemic, one could feel the expectation for this event among participants and dotwatchers. Amateur cyclists, young riders with huge potential in search of exposure, and ex-professional cyclists with the intention of finding a more adventurous cycling in gravel came together at The Traka.

The competitive side

The level of the names that took the top positions in the different distances and disciplines speaks for itself, and with a simple glance at the results sheet one can see the variety of profiles that lined up in Girona.

In The Traka 360 we saw for the first time the long-awaited battle between Mattia de Marchi and Lachlan Morton, who soon took the lead ahead of the rest and shared the first position until the rider from EF Education – EasyPost broke his saddle. He managed to fix it, losing some valuable minutes but crossing the finish line in second place.

For the second year in a row, the Italian from Enough CC was the winner, with local legend Tomi Misser rounding out the podium. He beat Diederik Delen and Ulrich Bartholmoes in the sprint. After 18h and 30 minutes, Marion Dziwnik crossed the finish line to proclaim herself the winner in the women’s category, leading Alba Xandri and Virginia Cancellieri by more than an hour.

As for the 200 km distance, the Catalan Lydia Iglesias held the pressure of the newcomer in gravel Maria Vittoria Sperotto, second, and the Icelandic Maria Gudmundsdottir. In the men’s category, a group of seven riders got in the breakaway right from the beginning, and they fought for the victory. The Dutchman Ivar Slik beat his compatriot Piotr Havik in the sprint, with the Swiss Konny Looser just behind.

At the head of this team we find Gerard Freixes, a true lover of nature and sports. After several years as a professional snowboarder, Gerard was forced to look for an alternative to his career because of a serious injury.

He and his wife Cris decided to return to Girona and try their luck organizing events related to sport. Little by little the project took shape and from there what we know today as Klassmark was born. The events they used to organize at the beginning have nothing to do with their current race calendar. Where in the past we could find a motocross race, now we have running and cycling events with zero environmental impact.

No nature, no future

One of the things that differentiate Klassmark from the rest of the organizers is their values and their constant fight against the deterioration of the territory and climate change.

Their motto No nature, no future is much more than four words. The progressive loss of rural life, the increase in tourism, and many other factors that are harmful to nature, have made Gerard and his team take action to try to stop this trend with the tools they have at their disposal.

We have seen Klassmark organize an uncountable number of waste collections in different parts of the territory or claim respect for nature through specific actions on social networks, but their values go beyond that and are also transferred to all the races they organize.

In this edition of The Traka, the organization has managed to offset the carbon footprint produced by both the event and that of all the event’s participants.

Small changes such as handing out organic cotton t-shirts, eliminating single-use packaging, installing fountains instead of handing out plastic bottles, or opting for local suppliers mean that the environment is not negatively affected by the existence of events like this one. As they say, “the only trace that these events want to leave is the memory of all its participants.”

Both publicly and internally, everything at Klassmark is done with nature in mind. They have rejected sponsors for not being aligned with their vision, and they will continue to take the necessary measures in order to minimize their impact on the environment.

Gerard mentions the responsibility that outdoor leisure practitioners have to maintain the essence of nature. “When I went on a trip outside the city as a child, you would find people working in the fields. Where there used to be a masia there is now a farmhouse hotel”, he tells us with resignation.

Although there are causes that neither he nor Klassmark can remedy, when making decisions, the Catalan company bases itself on what is best for the present and future of the environment. No nature, no future is their motto, and they are faithful to it.

In the short term, they intend to reduce the number of events on their calendar, prioritizing quality over quantity. They do not want to overcrowd any of the events they decide to keep, and they want to persuade the participants to prioritize the connection with nature.

Ambassadors of local regions

In recent months we learned of the news that Ranxo, one of the races that Klassmark organizes, was selected to be part of the UCI Gravel World Series, whose calendar will feature 12 gravel events from around the world in its first year.

The main reason for the interest in organizing a race in collaboration with the UCI is to be able to show the world the potential that Lleida has. While neither Girona nor The Traka need greater media exposure given that the entire cycling community is already aware of their virtues, Lleida, also located in Catalonia, is a territory with endless choices for cyclists to discover.

As Gerard tells us, there are several differences between the gravel that we can practice in one place and another. “Gravel in Lleida is much more remote. You feel like there is nothing around you”. On the other hand, the vast majority of gravel tracks in the Girona area are located near cities or towns, so it is difficult to see landscapes like those that characterize the central area of the United States, for example.

Ranxo is the next gravel event on the Klassmark calendar, and taking into account the know-how of the organizers and what it means to be part of the UCI Gravel World Series, we are all excited to see what this race has in store for us.
