Red Hook Crit – Milano No.5

Como narran los versos de una famosa canción popular Milanesa: “tut el mond l’e’ paes, sem d’acord; ma Milan l’e’ on gran Milan” (todo el mundo es país, estamos de acuerdo pero, ¡Milán es una gran Milán!), refiriéndose a ella como una ciudad única.

Una antigua frase que, pese al tiempo, no pasa de moda y sigue reflejando la realidad. Si algo pasa en Milán, seguro que no pasa desapercibida.

Este año, como en las ediciones anteriores, la ciudad Italiana ha ofrecido una atmosfera increíble. El barrio de Bovisa con sus calles grisáceas y ese estilo industrial ha sido otra vez el escenario perfecto para la carrera más esperada del año, la que pondría fin a una temporada repleta de emociones, caídas, y finales de carrera de infarto. El Red Hook Crit Milano No. 5 había llegado y prometía ser épico.

Las previsiones meteorológicas para el fin de semana eran desastrosas, anunciaban tormenta para el race-day y lluvias durante los dos días. Los nervios entre los corredores se podía palpar, todo el mundo estaba en tensión y muy pendientes del cielo.

El sábado amanece lluvioso pero no de la forma que se esperaba, lo hacía con mucha menos intensidad y a media mañana, incluso, dejó de llover.

Llegaba el momento de empezar con la ronda de clasificaciones, el suelo estaba mojado y con algunos charcos. Las chicas daban el pistoletazo de salida y con bastante cautela se fueron haciendo a la situación. Con cada vuelta las corredoras incrementaban un poco el ritmo. Ainara Elbusto, ganadora del RHC Barcelona No.2, sufre una aparatosa caída al intentar marcar su vuelta rápida. El golpe es duro pero no está dispuesta a perderse la gran carrera. El resto de chicas finalizaron su clasificación sin percances.

Era el turno de los chicos, comenzando por el grupo seis, donde se encontraba el equipo RAW Cycling Team y el Pista Barcelona, entre otros. Para ambos no hubo mucha suerte, suelo mojado y pequeñas incomprensiones con algunos debutantes con poca experiencia en carreras, no les permitieron hacer un buen papel durante los minutos de clasificación.

Van pasando los diferentes grupos, crecía la adrenalina y la tensión. Tiempos, rodillos, miradas felices de ver su resultado o gente que se desesperaba por no haber hecho suficiente.

El Red Hook Crit Milano, mantiene incontaminada su esencia de carrera urbana. La gente sentada en el suelo, muchos controlando obsesivamente la aplicación con los tiempos de cada ronda y otros tomándose una cerveza. Fotógrafos y filmmakers capturando los momentos previos a la carrera entre las carpas de varios equipos. Destacaba la presencia de alguna canal de televisión y alguna revista mainstream.

Ronda tras ronda, y con el asfalto cada vez más seco, llegó la hora del grupo uno, donde se encontraban los corredores más fuertes y rápidos. Los corredores aprietan los dientes y sacan todo su potencial. Apuran las frenadas, entregan hasta la última gota en los sprints de entrada en meta, arriesgan cada vez más y algunos rozan el límite. No faltan las caídas y tres corredores tienen que ser transportados al hospital con ambulancia, hay solo dos undiades y esto genera un pequeño momento de caos, la clasificación se detiene durante algo más de una hora y, cuando se reanuda, algunos corredores se quedan sin tiempo para entrar a la final, entre ellos, Stefan Vis del equipo F.A.S.T. Amsterdam.

Los problemas llevan a otros problemas, debido a algún desajuste en los horarios, se empieza a rumorear sobre la posible anulación de la Last Chance Race, y así es, finalmente la organización decide comunicar la cancelación de esta carrera. Como era de esperar, una importante parte de los equipos y corredores se enfadan considerablemente y no faltan las polémicas. También hay que decir que no hay que dramatizar por un episodio y crucificar a la organización en una situación como esa en la que todo se había complicado. Show must go on!

WOMEN’S CRIT

Ya no hay lugar para quejas y desacuerdos, ahora es la pista la que habla. Arranca la carrera y es como una bofetada en toda la cara… Ash Duban, Fleur Faure, Stefania Baldi y Ainara Elbusto, dejan claro desde la primera pedalada que van a por todas, rompen el grupo desde la primera vuelta, marcando un ritmo impresionante. Pasadas algunas vueltas la cabeza de carrera baja un poco el ritmo, y Sandra Jordà consigue en solitario y, tras un esfuerzo enorme, limar los diez segundos de distancia que le separaba del grupo líder.

Se acercaba el ecuador de la carrera, y las primeras vuelven a pisar el pedal del gas y se escapan nuevamente. Fleur, Ash, Stefania y Ainara marcan el ritmo en cabeza de carrera con cambios regulares y llegan a la línea de meta casi en pelotón.

En el Sprint final Ash Duban precede de pocos metros una increíble Ainara Elbusto, Fleur Faure y Stefania Baldi. Podemos decir que en este momento este grupo representa lo mejor del ciclismo mundial a nivel de critérium de piñón fijo.

Quinta posición y todo un carrerón para nuestra rider Sandra J. Pascó seguida por Vittoria Reati que ambas demuestran en su segundo Red Hook que tienen mucho talento.

Jo Celso después de una gran victoria en New York era la gran favorita, mala suerte y un accidente han complicado su camino en la series, pero nos alegró verle de nuevo en la parrilla de carrera.

En general cada una de las corredoras han contribuido a que el RHC Women’s fuera un éxito, Stefania con su interminable coraje y valentía, Fleur con su explosividad, Ash con su clase, Sandra con su energía y agresividad, Vittoria con su talento… ¡Ha sido un gran espectáculo! ¡Bravo por todas ellas!

MEN’S CRIT

La noche ha caído sobre Bovisa y el silencio se corta con un cuchillo, es el momento más esperado del fin de semana; en media hora de curvas y caídas y velocidad se decide el éxito o el fracaso de toda una temporada. ¡Death or Glory!

El público rodea el circuito. Según la organización unas 7.000 personas en las curvas más espectaculares se amontonan como “tifosi“. Falta poco. La célebre cuenta atrás comienza, y aumenta la tensión y la adrenalina: five, four, three, two, one…Gooo!!!!

El circuito de Milán, en ausencia de hairpin (180*) es probablemente el más rápid de la series. Guess who won the “Breakfast”?, ¡exacto señores! ¡”El chino” otra vez! mantiene su fama de Eddie Mercx en la primera vuelta, ¡increíble!

El grupo se come el asfalto húmedo de la noche con una media horaria de infarto. Como nos tienen acostumbrado, los corredores del equipo IMPULSE STAGE, MASH, CINELLI, IRIDE, SUPERNOVA, IN’BO, dan un espectáculo formando el grupo de la carrera. En cabeza se alternan Chas, Julio Padilla, Eduard Grosu, Ravaioli, Mario, en el mismo grupo mantienen el contacto Augusto Reati, Neil Bezdek, llegando a mitad de la carrera el grupo está fraccionado en varios pelotones. Cerca del grupo líder hay Bruzza, Bravini, Martucci y Pablo Rodríguez.

Los primeros han conseguido abrir un buen hueco, algunos grupos luchan por alcanzar al pelotón más cercano, mientras que otros lo hacen para que no les alcance la moto de seguridad que decreta el doblaje y la automática exclusión.

Últimas vueltas a todo gas, se prevé otra llegada en “volata” o al spint, ¡y así es! y por segundo año consecutivo Eduard Grosu del (Team Doppiozero) consigue poner las ruedas de su bici delante de todos, segundo Ivan Ravaioli (Team Chiodo fisso de marchi) y tercero Julio Padilla (Impulse Stage). Thibaud Lhenry lÍder de la general queda en 16º posición, con una gran prueba de carácter.

El Red Hook Milano No. 5 se ha distinguido por algunos aspectos respecto a los anteriormente disputados. El nivel en el último año ha crecido de forma exponencial y muchos corredores que gravitan en el ambiente pro y ex-pro se están acercando a esta nueva disciplina, en algún caso con escasos resultados, en otros, adaptándose perfectamente y consiguiendo victorias y resultados.

PODIUM

En el pódium hay sitio solo para alegría, felicidad, champagne y gritos.

Women’s

Gran triunfo de Ainara Elbusto del equipo Reyno de Navarra, que con 22 años es la primera chica en ganar la Red Hook Crit series, gracias a una indiscutible victoria en Barcelona y un segunda plaza en Milán que sabe a milagro después de la caída durante la clasificación. Segundo puesto para Ash Duban que demuestra toda su clase ganando la carrera con gran autoridad. Tercer puesto para la francesa Fleur Faure que ha sido gran protagonista de los Criterium del verano en Europa y por supuesto de las RHC Series.

Men’s

Sin duda, el gran protagonista, es Thibaud Lhenry. Pocos de nosotros antes de la carrera de Brooklyn hubiésemos apostado por una victoria del francés. Thibaud ha disputado una temporada impecable después del triunfo en New York ha sabido correr con la mente despejada y administrar su ventaja. “El chino” (Mario Paz Duque), ha demostrado durante toda la temporada de no ser solo el especialista de los “prime”, sino que es un corredor completo y que sabe estar en el grupo fuerte, además de colaborar con su equipo (IRIDE) a ganar el título, su segundo puesto es de los más merecidos. El guatemalteco Julio Padilla tercero absoluto se ha presentado en las series con gran estilo, ganando Barcelona y quedando tercero en Milán, estamos seguros que volveremos a hablar de él durante la temporada próxima. También queremos mencionar a Augusto Reati en la lista de los grandes protagonistas del 2014, cuarto en la general y protagonista de una temporada a todo gas siempre cerca del gran resultado.

Team Championship

¡La gloria es toda para el team IRIDE Squadra Corse! ¡Enhorabuena a todos los miembros del equipo! Nicholas Varani, Stefano Nicoletti, Tommaso Nolli, Mario Paz Duque, Enrico Biganzolli, Samuele Cai, Gabriele Grazioli. Y un gran aplauso a Walter y Matteo por ser los creadores de este gran. ¡Bravo!

Como cada año en la línea de meta de Milán nacen nuevas reflexiones, mientras los voluntarios desmontan el palco y nos despedimos de la Red Hook Crit Series 2014, la gran pregunta que se formula mucha gente es: “¿dónde acabará todo esto?”

El 2014 ha sido un año de profundos cambios, el RHC continua entusiasmando y creciendo. Realmente no tenemos una respuesta, a día de hoy, simplemente esperamos ver cuales serán las novedades para el 2015, si como se rumorea, será Londres la cuarta ciudad a hospedar una prueba más del circuito, si habrá cambios sustanciales o si esta carreras que viaja por el mundo y enamora cada vez más apasionados del ciclismo se quedará como la carrera reina del ciclismo urbano o si tratará dar el salto a un contexto más profesional. De momento son solo reflexiones e hipótesis.

Enhorabuena a David Trimble y a todo su STAFF por el excelente trabajo hecho durante la Red Hook Crit series 2014.

As narrated the verses of a famous Milanese folk song: “tut el mond l’e’ paes, se, d’acord; ma Milan l’e’ on gran Milan” (everyone is country, we are agree, however Milan is a great Milan!), referring to it as a unique city.

An old phrase that, despite the time, yet timeless and continues to reflect reality. If something happens in Milan, certainly not go unnoticed.

This year, as in previous editions, the Italian city has offered an incredible atmosphere. Bovisa neighborhood with its gray streets and its industrial style has been again the perfect scene for the most expected race of the year, which ended a full emotive season, with falls and an exciting finale. The Red Hook Crit Milano No. 5 had come and promised to be epic.

The weather forecast for the weekend was disastrous; storm has been announced for the race-day and rain on both days. Nerves among runners were palpable; everyone was tense and very aware of the sky.

Saturday dawns rainy but not in the way that was expected, it was with much less intensity and by midmorning, even the rain stopped.

Was time to start the round of rankings, the floor was wet and puddles. The girls gave the starting signal and cautiously were getting used to the situation. By each lap runners increased the pace a bit. Ainara Elbusto, RHC Barcelona No.2 winner, suffered a spectacular fall while trying to mark her lap. The blow was hard however she was unwilling to miss the great race. The rest of the girls finished their classification without mishaps.

It was the turn of the boys, starting with the group six where RAW Track Cycling Team and Pista Barcelona were part, among others. Both were not much lucky, due to wet floor and small misunderstandings with some newcomers with little experience in racing, they couldn’t play a good role in the classification minutes.

They go by different groups, grew adrenaline and tension. Times, rollers, happy glances to look at their results or people who are desperate for not reaching their expectatives.

The Red Hook Crit Milano still remains the essence of street race. Some people sitting on the floor, some others were controlling several times the application of each round and some others taking a beer. Photographers and filmmakers were capturing the pre-race between the tents of several teams. It highlighted the television channel presence and mainstream magazine.

Round after round, and with the increasingly dry asphalt, it was the time of the group one, where the strongest and fastest runners meet. The riders clamp jaw shut and pull out their full potential. They rushed braking, gave the last drop in the sprints crossing the finish line, risked increasing and pushed the limit. Falls were not missing and three riders have to be transferred to the hospital by ambulance, there are only two of them and this generates a little moment of chaos, the classification has been stopped for more than an hour and when resumed, some runners didn’t have time to get into the final, one of them was Stefan Vis from F.A.S.T Team, Amsterdam.

The problems lead to other problems, due to some mismatch in times, people began to rumor about the possible cancellation of the Last Chance Race, this was the case, and finally the organization decided to communicate the cancellation of this race. As expected, a significant part of the teams and riders got angry and no shortage of controversy. To be honest we should not dramatize an episode and not crucify the organization in such a situation where everything was complicated. Show must go on!

WOMEN’S CRIT

There is no place for complaints and disagreements, the track is now speaking. Start the race and it’s like a slap across the face … Ash Duban, Fleur Faure, Stefania Baldi and Ainara Elbusto make it clear from the first pedal stroke going all out, break the group in the first round, setting a awesome pace. Past few laps head race down the rate a bit, and Sandra Jordà reached after a huge effort and by herself, shaping ten seconds of distance between her and the group leader.

Ecuador’s race approached, and the first racers started again to step on the gas pedal and escape again. Fleur, Ash, Stefania and Ainara set the pace on the top of the race with regular changes and reached the finish line almost in peloton.

In the final Sprint Ash Duban preceded few meters the incredible Ainara Elbusto, Fleur Faure and Stefania Baldi. We can say that at this time this group represents the best of world cycling criterium level of fixed gear.

Fifth position and an awesome race for our rider Sandra J. Pascó followed by Vittoria Reati; both demonstrated in their second Network Hook that they have a lot of talent.

Jo Celso after a great victory in New York was the favorite one, bad luck and an accident made not easy her role during qualifies, but it made us happy to see her again in the starting line.

In general terms each of the riders contributed that the RHC Women’s was a success, Stefania with her endless courage and bravery, Fleur with her explosiveness, Ash with her class, Sandra with her energy and aggressiveness, Vittoria with her talent … It was a great show! Bravo to all!

MEN’S CRIT

Night has fallen on Bovisa and silence is cut by a knife, is the most expected moment of the weekend; in half an hour of curves, falls and speed the season success or failure will be decided. Death or Glory!

The public surrounded the circuit. According to the organization about 7,000 people in the most amazing curves are crowded as “tifosi”. The expected event is approaching. The famous countdown began, and increased the tension and adrenaline: five, four, three, two, one…Gooo !!!!

The circuit of Milan, in the absence of hairpin (180 *) is probably the fastest of the series. Guess who won the “Breakfast”?, that’s it gentlemen! “El Chino” once again! He maintained its reputation of Eddie Mercx in the first round, amazing!

The group ate up the wet pavement of the night during an awesome half an hour. As we have used to the riders of MASH, CINELLI, IRIDE, SUPERNOVA, IN’BO teams gave us a show to make up the race group. At the head Chas, Julio Padilla, Eduard Grosu, Ravaioli, Mario, in the same group remained Augusto Reati, Neil Bezdek, reaching half of the race the group is subdivided into several bunches. Closed to the leading group there were Bruzza, Bravini, Martucci and Pablo Rodriguez.

The first ones managed to open a good hollow, some groups fight to reach to the most nearby bunch, whereas others do it in order to not being reached by the safety motorcycle that decrees the overtake and the automatic exclusion.

Last laps full of gas, another arrival is expected in “volata” or “al spinta”, so it was! So for the second consecutive year Eduard Grosu from (Team Doppiozero) got to put the wheels of his bicycle in front of all, the second Ivan Ravaioli from (Team Chiodo fisso of marchi) and third Julio Padilla from (Stimulate Stage). Thibaud Lhenry leader of the general stayed in 16th position, with a great brave character.

The Red Hook Milano No. 5 has been different to some aspects in relation to the previous one. The level during the last year has grown exponentially and many riders pro and ex–pro they are approaching to this new discipline, in some case with scanty results, in others, adapting perfectly and obtaining victories and good results.

PODIUM

On the podium there were only happiness, champagne and shouts.

Women’s

Great triumph of Ainara Elbusto from Reyno de Navarra team, who at 22 years old is the first girl to win the Red Hook Crit series, thanks to an undisputed victory in Barcelona and a second place in Milan taste of a miracle after the fall during the classification. Second place for Ash Duban showed all her class winning the race with great authority. Third place for the French women Fleur Faure who has been protagonist of the Criteriums of this summer in Europe and of course of the RHC Series.

Men’s

Without doubts, the main protagonist, was Thibaud Lhenry. Few of us before the race in Brooklyn would bet on a French victory. Thibaud has played an impeccable season after the triumph in New York, he has managed to run with a clear mind and manage his advantage. “El chino” (Mario Paz Duque), demonstrated during the whole season that he is not only a specialist of “prime”, but he is a complete rider and he knows to be in the strong group, in addition to collaborating with his team (IRIDE) to win the title, his second position is the most well-deserved. The Guatemalan Julio Padilla third absolute position has been presented in the series with great style, winning Barcelona and being third in Milan, we are confident that we will talk again about him during the next season. We also want to mention to Augusto Reati in the list of the major lead riders in 2014, fourth position in the general classification and protagonist of a full gas season and always near the great result.

Team Championship

The glory is all for IRIDE Squadra Corse team! Congratulations to all the members of the team! Nicholas Varani, Tommaso Nolli, Mario Paz Duke, Enrico Biganzolli, Samuele Cai and Gabriele Grazioli. And a big applause to Walter and Matteo as the creators of this great team. Bravo!

As every year in the finish line of Milan new reflections have been come, while volunteers disassembled the box and we said goodbye to the Red Hook Crit Series 2014, the question which many people formulated was: “where will end all of this?”

2014 has been a year of deep changes, RHC carry on growing and exciting. Today we don’t have a real answer, just look forward to seeing what will be the news for 2015, if as rumored, London shall be the fourth city to put up one more race circuit, if there will be substantial changes if this race that travels around of the world and draws every time more passionated of cycling, will remain as the urban cycling race Queen or if it will try to make the leap to a more professional context. At the moment are only reflections and hypotheses.
