Pregunta rápida: ¿cuántos puertos de montaña de los Alpes con una altitud superior a los 2.500 metros sois capaces de mencionar? Si os dejásemos pensar un poco, probablemente os vendrían a la cabeza cimas icónicas como el Passo dello Stelvio o el Col de l’Iseran, y los más expertos quizás podrían identificar un par más.

Entre este selecto grupo de puertos de montaña se encuentra el Timmelsjoch, en los Alpes de Ötztal. Puede que no sea una de los puertos más conocidos, pero vale la pena visitar el paisaje alpino que acompaña a uno durante el recorrido. Crea una frontera entre Austria e Italia, y el camino hacia la cima a 2.509 metros deleita a todos los ciclistas que tienen la fuerza para llegar hasta el final.

La razón por la que lo mencionamos es porque, este coloso, será uno de los platos fuertes de la próxima edición de Among The Giants. Nuestra búsqueda constante de las mejores montañas para escalar nos llevó a la zona del Tirol, y tenemos muchas ganas de conquistar los Alpes nuevamente. Hay multitud de lugares adicionales por los que transcurriremos que vale la pena mencionar, pero os daremos más información sobre ellos durante nuestro viaje.

La recepción al anuncio de la vuelta de Among the Giants fue excepcional, y tras la imposibilidad de un ATG en 2020, este año hemos estado preparado a conciencia una nueva edición. Dada la situación sanitaria actual, no es fácil organizar un evento que involucre a personas de diferentes países, más aún en un entorno ajeno al de los organizadores. Por otro lado, queremos que esta edición también sea especial por un notable incremento de la participación femenina con respecto a años anteriores.

El campo base escogido

Tanto nuestros esfuerzos como las ayudas de las instituciones locales han sido vitales para garantizar que este verano Among the Giants se pueda llevar a cabo en la zona del Tirol, y más concretamente en el valle Ötztal. La gran atención e involucración de las organizaciones de turismo tanto de Austria en general, como Tirol y el valle de Ötztal en concreto, nos ha ayudado a estar al día de la situación sanitaria del país que nos acoge, y junto con ellos colaboraremos para que el evento se lleve a cabo sin ningún contratiempo.

En esta área hay infinidad de actividades a realizar a lo largo del año. Existe una gran variedad de rutas, tanto para mountain bike, con senderos que recorren todo el valle, como para ciclismo en carretera, con exigentes recorridos que incluyen grandes cimas a coronar. Fuera del contexto de la bicicleta, el valle ofrece un sin fin de caminos, con toda la infraestructura necesaria para ir de un lugar a otro sin necesidad de vehículo propio. Como toda región alpina, el valle de Ötztal es también un destino ideal para deportes de invierno, con 6 estaciones de esquí que cuentan con más de 350 kilómetros de pistas.

El Ötztal es el valle más grande del Tirol, y la cadena montañosa que lo rodea lo protege del viento frío. Está lleno de verdes prados, y consideramos que es el campo base perfecto para nuestra expedición por su proximidad a todos los puertos de montaña que tenemos intención de coronar.

Desde el 31 de julio hasta el 4 de agosto aprovecharemos al máximo lo que la zona tiene para ofrecer, y junto a los participantes procedentes de diferentes puntos de Europa, crearemos un fuerte vínculo en cuestión de días.

Formato del proyecto

En caso de que alguien aún no esté familiarizado con el formato de Among the Giants, vamos a explicar cuál es nuestro objetivo cada vez que nos reunimos con un grupo de 15 personas en uno de los lugares más impresionantes del continente.

Among the Giants es un proyecto en el que confluyen, entre otros aspectos, ciclismo, aventura, cultura y satisfacción personal. Los participantes coronan icónicas cimas y descubren nuevas carreteras rodeadas de paisajes impresionantes. También se trata de respirar aire fresco, disfrutar de unos días de libertad y sacar el máximo partido a una experiencia de este tipo.

Este evento destaca no por el viaje en sí, sino por la satisfacción generada al compartir esos mágicos momentos que el ciclismo nos aporta, creando sinergias y dejando nuestras posibles diferencias atrás. Por encima de todo, Among the Giants se basa en la creación de vínculos con extraños gracias a una pasión en común; la bicicleta.

Marcas involucradas

Para esta cuarta edición, uniremos fuerzas con diferentes perfiles y marcas que encajan a la perfección con los valores de Among the Giants. Mirando hacia atrás en el tiempo, estamos muy orgullosos de ver el recorrido del proyecto y cómo ha ido evolucionando desde su primera edición en los Dolomitas.

Cannondale Bicycles

La sede de Cannondale se encuentra en Estados Unidos, pero sin embargo sus productos se pueden encontrar por todo el mundo. Fueron pioneros en el uso del aluminio y carbono, revolucionaron el mercado con sus suspensiones lefty para mountain bike, y siguen apostando por proyectos innovadores, como su colaboración con el equipo EF Education – NIPPO.

ENVE Composites

La marca estadounidense es conocida principalmente por fabricar algunas de las mejores llantas y juegos de ruedas disponibles en el mercado, y han ido un paso por delante con el reciente lanzamiento de su Custom Road Bike. Uno puede ver ruedas ENVE en el podio de las carreras de descenso, el Giro de Italia o el criterium local, por lo que está claro que siempre tienen un producto que se adapta a las necesidades de cada uno.

FOCUS Bikes

Procedente de Stuttgart, Alemania, FOCUS tiene una amplia cartera de bicicletas bajo la etiqueta de “smart performance”, y la marca está involucrada en muchos proyectos relacionados con diferentes disciplinas del ciclismo. Todo el mundo en FOCUS Bikes es un ciclista apasionado, por lo que ellos mismos prueban sus productos y se aseguran de que van más allá de los estándares de la industria.

Hunt Bike Wheels

El mercado de las ruedas para bicicletas tiene un nuevo protagonista, ya que Hunt se está convirtiendo rápidamente en uno de los fabricantes más populares. Por un lado, ahora se asocian con Team Qhubeka NextHash y son visibles en las carreras más prestigiosas del mundo. Por otro lado, todavía quieren tener voz en otras formas de experimentar el ciclismo, por lo que ser uno de los participantes de Among the Giants fue un paso natural.

Ooni Pizza Ovens

La nueva tendencia entre los amantes de la comida es Ooni, ya que estos hornos portátiles cocinan pizzas en 60 segundos a 500ºC. Lo que comenzó como un negocio entre marido y mujer se ha convertido en una empresa ganadora de múltiples premios, todo ello respaldado por las positivas reseñas de clientes y medios. Quizás esta marca no esté directamente relacionada con el ciclismo, pero vio el potencial de nuestro proyecto y se unirá a nosotros en Austria.

Reboots Recovery Boots

La recuperación es una parte clave de la rutina de los atletas profesionales y amateurs, y Reboots es una de las primeras marcas en ofrecer botas de recuperación que aceleran el proceso de recuperación. Este producto reduce los niveles de ácido láctico en sangre y previene lesiones por sobreentrenamiento, pudiendo volver a realizar durante la siguiente sesión.

Tactic

La reconocida marca catalana, Tactic, con su gran experiencia en la producción de ropa ciclista personalizada y, desde hace unos años, también por sus creativas colecciones, estará con nosotros en Austria. Con sede en Girona, está haciendo un gran esfuerzo para estar en algunos de los eventos de gravel y carretera más prestigiosos. Están escalando rápidamente su negocio y pasando de lo local a lo internacional, con embajadores en todo el mundo.

TwentyOne Cycling

La joven marca TwentyOne Cycling originaria de Barcelona, se ha convertido en toda una sensación entre los ciclistas de la ciudad condal y sus alrededores. Los diseños y patronaje de sus prendas son únicos, como por ejemplo sus llamativas base layers. Con conceptos como “eco-performance”, quieren ofrecer los productos más técnicos y elegantes en una relación respetuosa con el medio ambiente.

Visit Austria

Austria tiene todo lo que uno puede imaginar acerca de actividades outdoor, tanto en invierno como verano, y Visit Austria promociona de la mejor manera todo lo que el país ofrece. Esta es una edición especial restringida por la actual situación global, pero las diferentes organizaciones de turismo nos han demostrado que Austria es un país seguro y con las medidas de prevención para poder disfrutar de la naturaleza y sus “gigantes” en unos días de auténtico ciclismo.

Quick question: how many cycling climbs of the Alps with an elevation above 2.500 meters can you mention? If we let you think for a bit, you will probably come up with iconic climbs like Passo dello Stelvio or Col de l’Iseran, and the experts may be able to identify a couple more.

Among this select group of mountain passes, there is the Timmelsjoch in the Ötztal Alps. It may not be one of the most well-known climbs, but the Alpine landscape one encounters while reaching the top is worth the visit. It creates a border between Austria and Italy, and the scenic road to the summit at 2.509 meters delights all cyclists who have the strength to reach the top.

Why do we mention it? Because it will be one of the highlights during the next edition of Among The Giants. Our constant search for the best mountains to climb led us to the Tirol area, and we are really looking forward to conquering the Alps again. There are many more places included in our routes worth mentioning, but we will let you know more about them during our trip.

The engagement of our announcement saying that Among the Giants is back was exceptional, and after not being able to organize ATG in 2020, this year we have fully focused on setting everything for a new edition. The current health situation does not make it easy to organize an event that involves people from different countries, even more if it is held in an environment outside of the comfort zone of the organizers. Furthermore, this will also be a special edition because there will be a noticeable increase in female participation in comparison to previous years.

The chosen base camp

Both our own effort and the help from the local institutions have been key to make sure that a new edition of Among the Giants can take place this summer in the Tirol area, and more precisely in the Ötztal valley. The great care and involvement of the tourism organizations from Austria in general, and Tirol and the Ötztal valley in particular, have helped us to stay up to date on the health situation of the host country, and we will collaborate together with them to carry on with our event with no setbacks.

In the Ötztal area, there is an infinite number of activities to do during the year. There exists a large variate of routes, both for mountain bikes with trails that cross the valley, and for road bikes, with tough tracks to follow that include huge climbs to conquer. Outside of the cycling context, the valley has endless paths, with all the necessary infrastructure to go from one place to another without the need for a private vehicle. Same as all Alpine regions, the Ötztal valley is also a perfect destination for winter sports, with 6 ski stations that include more than 350 slope kilometers.

The Ötztal is Tirol’s longest side valley, and the range of mountains around it protects it from the cold wind. It is full of green meadows, and the perfect base camp for our expedition due to its proximity to all the roads we intend to ride.

From the 31st of July until the 4th of August we will make the most of what the area has to offer, and together with the participants coming from different points of Europe, we will create a strong bond in a matter of days.

Format of the project

In case there is someone still not familiar with the format of Among the Giants, let us explain what our goal is every time we gather with 15 people in some of the most astonishing places around the continent.

Among the Giants is a project in which cycling, adventure, culture, and personal satisfaction, among other aspects, come together. The participants reach the top of iconic climbs and discover new roads surrounded by amazing landscapes. It is also about breathing fresh air, enjoying some days of freedom, and making the most of a unique experience.

This is an outstanding project not only because of the trip itself but also because of the satisfaction of sharing some of those magic moments that cycling always delivers, creating synergies and leaving our possible differences behind. Above everything else, Among the Giants is based on the creation of bonds with strangers thanks to our common passion; the bike.

Involved brands

For the fourth edition of Among the Giants, we will join forces with different profiles and brands that fit perfectly with the values of our project. Looking back in time, we are proud of the direction of our project since the first edition in the Dolomites.

Cannondale Bicycles

Cannondale has its headquarters in the United States, but nonetheless one can find its products all over the world. They were pioneers in the use of aluminum and carbon, revolutionized the market with their lefty suspension for mountain bikes, and continue being involved in innovative projects, like their collaboration with the EF Education – NIPPO team.

ENVE Composites

The American brand is mostly known for manufacturing some of the best rims and wheelsets available in the market, and they have gone one step ahead with the recent launch of their Custom Road Bike. One can see ENVE wheels on the podium of downhill races, the Giro d’Italia, or the local crit, so it is clear that they always have a product that fits the requirements of the individual.

FOCUS Bikes

Coming from Stuttgart, Germany, FOCUS has a broad portfolio of bikes under the “smart-performance” tag, and the brand is involved in many projects regarding different cycling disciplines. Everyone at FOCUS Bikes is a passionate rider, so they test their products themselves and make sure they are on top of the industry standards.

Hunt Bike Wheels

The bike wheels industry has a new big player, as Hunt is quickly becoming one of the most popular manufacturers. On the one side, they are now partnering with Team Qhubeka NextHash and being visible in the most prestigious races around the world. On the other side, they still want to have a say in other ways of experiencing cycling, so being one of the participants of Among the Giants was a logical step.

Ooni Pizza Ovens

The new trend among food lovers is Ooni, as these portable ovens cook pizzas in 60 seconds at 500ºC. What started as a husband-and-wife team has become a multi-award winner business backed by customer and media reviews. This brand may not be directly related to cycling, but saw the potential of our project and will join us in Austria.

Reboots Recovery Boots

Recovery is a key part of the routine of professional and amateur athletes, and Reboots is one of the first brands to offer recovery boots that accelerate the recovery process. This product reduces the lactic acid levels in the blood and prevents injuries from overtraining, being able to perform again during the following session.

Tactic

The well-known Catalan brand Tactic, with their experience in the production of their custom cycling apparel and also their creative collections, will be present in Austria. Based in Girona, they are nowadays present in some of the most prestigious gravel and road events. They are quickly escalating their business and going from local to international, with ambassadors around the world.

TwentyOne Cycling

The young brand TwentyOne Cycling is a sensation among cyclists in and around the Barcelona area. Their designs and patterns are unique, with their base layers as a great example. With concepts like “eco-performance”, they want to offer the most technical and stylish products in a respectful relationship with the environment.

Visit Austria

Austria has everything one can imagine as regards outdoor activities, both in summer and winter, and Visit Austria promotes what the country has to offer in the best way. It is a special edition constrained by the global health situation, but the different tourism organizations have shown to us that Austria is a safe country with all the necessary measures in place to enjoy the nature of the region and its “giants” during a few days of pure cycling.
