MBP – Road to Criterium Gijón

We’ve been hearing about Criterium Gijón and all the innovations that are preparing for this year’s edition promises to be one of the best. With all this, My Beautiful Parking, has decided to set up a trip on their bikes for 950 km, the distance between Gijon and Barcelona all to promote this important appointment and fixed gear, why not enjoy an adventure like this.

Since we love these feats and in order to know a bit more information for anyone who might be interested, we decided to make some questions for Simon form the MBP team and has happy collaborated with us.

1. How did the idea of the trip come out?

Firstly it is important to know that both Parris and I (Simon) are from Gijón. Planning a trip back “home” by bike, was very interesting to us. Having this plan in our heads for a long time we decided to carry out and joining MBP and Criterium de Gijón. The end result: A bicycle trip that serves to promote the criterium Gijon during the week before the event.

2. What can you tell us about the route?

The straight line is always the shortest path. From Barcelona to Gijón are many miles and we could not lengthen much. Getting time off to participate is complicated and few more days would be more difficult to get people to accompany us. True, there are occasional detour to pass through attractive scenery and we have tried to avoid big cities as much as possible. The star leg of the trip will be the last. Here yes I have done differently. On Friday we be in Cangas de Onis with a second group consisting of all cyclists who are in the pre-Gijón Criterium. Together we will climb to the legendary lakes of Covadonga and then we cycle together to Gijón. There will be a very long period but it will have enough altitude.

3. Are you going to take some kind of assistance?

At first the idea of the trip was simple. Get on the bike and get to Gijon but the ball stared to get bigger. We now have two vehicles a van for support that will take our luggage and a car in which there will be a team of photographers. Try to make a small documentary of the same type as the trip to Madrid 3 years ago.

4. How many are you currently?

We are currently nine cyclists:

  • Fran, Dani and Toni from Pedalea o Revienta.
  • Edu, a guy who’s from Gijon and is going to come to Barcelona to make the trip.
  • Uri and Poque. Two friends cyclists who have changed their summer plans pedaling in the Pyrenees following the Tour to come with us.
  • Oscar bicycle messenger 30-60. What will travel the 950km with his Bullit. That’s nothing!
  • Raul’s from Pista BCN
  • And I, Simon.

Initially the group is quite closed but can be someone else to join.

5. Any requirement / recommendation for people who wants to join?

Requirements and Recommendations:

  • Having a comfortable and functional bicycle, plus a little physically prepared before making the trip.
  • About material: A bit of everything. Something that entertains, something waterproof and about three bibs and jerseys.
  • We’re camping and sleeping along the route. Camping equipment is needed. Rest is important and a good way to solve the issue of Camping is with hammocks and a sleeping bag.

6. You already have already experience in this long distance ride, reasons why you encourage people to sign up?

A bike trip is a unique experience. It is a story that will be amazed every mile you go. You’ll found new landscapes, new roads, cities and endless anecdotes.

7. Will you do a party/appreciation for the brave that make it?

There are two events scheduled: The first, a Bingo Party in MBP, with lots of prizes for all participants, will sell beer and be a pica-pica for all attendees. The next will be in Gijón dinner for all participants to travel, the best way to recover all the lost energy.

Besides a great web according to the trip, have designed some merchandising to finance part of the challenge and can be purchased directly at the store or by contacting them through their website.

Regarding Bingo Party, takes place this Friday, July 11, and have developed a pretty good party. If you’re in Barcelona, do not hesitate to go have, fun, laughter, and many gifts await you.

    Llevamos días oyendo hablar del Criterium Gijón y todas las novedades que están preparando para la edición de este año que promete ser de las mejores. Con todo esto, My Beautiful Parking, ha decidido montar un viaje para recorrer en bicicleta 950 km, la distancia que separa Barcelona de Gijón y todo para promover esta importante cita del piñón fijo y, porque no, disfrutar de una aventura de estas características.

    Como nos encantan estas hazañas y con el fin de conocer un poco más de información para todo aquel que le pueda interesar, hemos decidido hacer unas preguntillas a Simón del equipo de MBP y que muy gustosamente ha colaborado con nosotros.

    1. ¿Cómo surgió la idea del viaje?

    En primer lugar es importante saber que tanto Parris como yo (Simón) somos de Gijón. El plan de un viaje a “casa” en Bicicleta nos resultaba de lo más interesante. Teniendo este plan en nuestras cabezas durante mucho tiempo decidimos llevarlo a cabo uniendo a MBP y al Criterium de Gijón. El resultado final: Un viaje en bicicleta que sirva para promocionar el criterium de Gijón durante la semana anterior al evento.

    2. ¿Qué nos podéis contar sobre la ruta?

    La línea recta siempre es el camino más corto. De Barcelona a Gijón hay muchos kilómetros y no nos podíamos alargar mucho. Conseguir días libres para poder participar es complicado y cuantos más días más difícil sería conseguir a gente que nos acompañase. Es verdad que hay algún que otro desvío para pasar a través de paisajes más atractivos y que hemos intentado evitar las grandes ciudades en la medida de lo posible. La etapa estrella del viaje será la última. Aquí sí que lo hemos hecho diferente. El viernes nos encontraremos en Cangas de Onís con un segundo grupo formado por todos aquellos ciclistas que estén en Gijón el jueves anterior al Criterium. Juntos haremos la mítica ascensión a los lagos de Covadonga y después pedalearemos juntos hasta Gijón. No será una etapa muy larga pero sí que tendrá bastante desnivel.

    3. ¿Lleváis algún tipo de asistencia?

    En un primer momento la idea del viaje era muy sencilla. Pillar la bici y llegar a Gijón pero la bola de nieve se fue haciendo cada vez más grande. Ahora contamos con dos vehículos una furgoneta de apoyo que nos llevará el equipaje y un coche en el que irá el equipo de fotografía y rodaje. Intentaremos hacer un pequeño documental del mismo tipo que el del viaje a Madrid de hace 3 años.

    4. ¿Cuántos sois actualmente?

    Actualmente somos 9 ciclistas:

    • Fran, Dani y Toni de Pedalea o Revienta
    • Edu, un chico de Gijón que se viene hasta Barcelona para hacer el viaje.
    • Uri y Poque. Dos amigos ciclistas que han cambiado sus planes de verano de pedalear por los pirineos siguiendo el Tour para venirse con nosotros
    • Oscar de la mensajería en bicicleta 30-60. Qué recorrerá los 950km con su Bullit. Ahí es nada!
    • Raul del Pista BCN
    • Y yo, Simón.

    En principio el grupo está bastante cerrado pero puede ser que se sume alguien más.

    5. ¿Algún requisito/recomendación para la gente que quiera apuntarse?

    Recomendaciones y requisitos:

    • Tener una bicicleta cómoda y funcional, además de prepararse un poco físicamente antes de hacer el viaje.
    • Sobre el material: Un poco de todo. Algo que abrigue, algo impermeable y unos tres culotes y maillots.
    • Para dormir iremos acampando a lo largo del recorrido. Se necesitará material de acampada. El descanso es importante y una buena manera de solucionar el tema de las acampadas es con hamacas y un saco de dormir.

    6. Vosotros tenéis ya experiencia en esto de viajes de larga distancia, ¿por qué razones animaríais a la gente a que se apuntaran?

    Un viaje en bicicleta es una experiencia única. Es una historia que te va sorprendiendo a cada kilómetro que avanzas. Es encontrarse nuevos paisajes, nuevas carreteras, ciudades y un sinfín de anécdotas.

    7. ¿Se hará alguna fiesta/reconocimiento para los valientes?

    Hay dos eventos preparados: El primero una Bingo Party en MBP, con un montón de premios para todos los participantes, se venderán cervezas y habrá un pica-pica para todos los asistentes. La siguiente será en Gijón una cena para todos los participantes al viaje, la mejor manera de recuperar toda la energía perdida.

    Además de una web estupenda acorde con el viaje, han diseñado todo un repertorio de merchandising para financiar parte del reto y que se puede adquirir directamente en la tienda, o bien, contactando con ellos a través de su web.

    Respecto a la Bingo Party, se celebra este viernes, 11 de julio a las 20:00 h, y han preparado una fiesta bien guapa. Si estáis en Barcelona, no dudéis en acudir, diversión, risas, y muchos regalos os esperan.
