Mavic Comete Ultimate II: Rendimiento sin concesiones

Si centramos nuestra mirada en calzado de ciclismo y repasamos los modelos de alta gama de las marcas más punteras, de entre las elegidas, estamos seguros que la marca Mavic, ocuparía varios lugares gracias a algunos de sus modelos más sofisticados. Del catálogo de la firma francesa y centradas en obtener el máximo rendimiento, destacan las nuevas Comete Ultimate II: unas zapatillas pensadas y diseñadas para los ciclistas más exigentes y las competiciones de más alto nivel, donde uno no puede permitirse el lujo de desperdiciar ningún vatio.

Segunda generación

La primera generación de las Comete Ultimate irrumpieron en el mercado como algo nunca antes visto, tanto por sus grandes innovaciones, su aspecto radical, así como por su elevado precio respecto a sus competidoras más cercanas. Lo que es indudable, fue la revolución que consiguió Mavic en el mercado presentando estas zapatillas.

Esta nueva edición, como su antecesora, está formada por una evolucionada carcasa de carbono y un botín interno que actúa como interfaz entre el pie y la zapatilla, y que aporta más comodidad y mejor ajuste gracias a su nuevo diseño.

Una de las mejoras que creemos destaca es la evolución en la ventilación de la zapatilla, incorporando más aperturas en los laterales y en la parte inferior de la carcasa. La segunda generación conserva la ligereza como uno de los puntos fuertes de las Comete Ultimate con sus ajustados 210 gramos. Han introducido tallas intermedias para asegurar un mayor abanico de posibilidades para todos los tamaño de pies y, algo que no podemos dejar pasar por alto, es su nuevo precio (700 €) que, a pesar de seguir siendo elevado, supone una importante rebaja respecto a su predecesora.

Energy Shell Carbon

Es fácil suponer un importante trabajo de I+D en la carcasa exterior (bautizada como Energy Shell Carbon) para llegar a conseguir el resultado final.

Desde Mavic aseguran que la tecnología aplicada en el desarrollo y fabricación de esta parte de la zapatilla, permite una transmisión de la fuerza que ejercemos sobre la bici sin precedentes, y todo es gracias a la rigidez del conjunto combinado con la distancia mínima entre el pedal y la zapatilla (tan solo 4.5 mm), lo que también mejora la biomecánica del pedaleo.

Cuando extraes el botín interno y observas con detenimiento los detalles y los acabados que forman esta monopieza de carbono, asombra ver el acabado realizado por Mavic. También, teniendo la zapatilla “desnuda”, podremos observar con nuestras propias manos la rigidez y la ligereza que ofrece el que podríamos llamar con tintes futuristas, exoesqueleto de las Comete Ultimate II.

Complementan el conjunto el sistema de cierres Ergo, propio de la marca, los cuales ajustan con precisión y firmeza la bota a nuestro pie.

Mayor confort, mejores acabados

Sobre el botín interno también han introducido varias mejoras. Han substituido el tejido interno por uno más agradable que aporta mayor confort, y han mejorado el patrón de las telas para asegurar un mejor ajuste y adaptabilidad del pie. Además, han actualizado las gomas por unas más suaves sin perder retención gracias a la tecnología patentada Matryx, que utiliza hilo de carbono para un mejor soporte y transpirabilidad.

Todos estos cambios , aseguran, se han logrado llevar a cabo sin agregar peso o reducir el rendimiento.

Conclusiones

Durante el tiempo que hemos estado probando las Comete Ultimate II hemos podido sentir en primera persona todos esos detalles que os hemos contado anteriormente.

La forma en que se transmite la fuerza en cada pedaleo es asombrosa, y el ajuste junto con la rigidez de la zapatilla te hace sentirte absolutamente soldado a la bicicleta.

Por otro lado, si se da el caso que tienes un pie un poco más ancho de lo normal o alguna diferencia de tamaño entre un pie y otro, la carcasa de carbono no te da ese margen que otras zapatillas “convencionales” te pueden dar y, por lo tanto, pueden presentarse molestias si no se escoge la talla correcta.

No hay opción de colores, entendemos que la decisión de Mavic por dejar el carbono a la vista puede resultar atractivo pero echamos de menos poder escoger entre uno o dos colores más.

Sin duda, estamos ante una auténtica zapatilla para competición o para aquellos que buscan disfrutar del ciclismo a un nivel de exigencia muy alto. En el caso de ser uno de estos dos perfiles, el precio, teniendo en cuenta la fabricación y los materiales utilizados además de las prestaciones que aporta, pasará a un segundo plano a la hora de adquirir las zapatillas que utilizaremos para las próximas temporadas.

Whether we just take a quick glance or closely inspect each and every pair of cycling shoes in the market, without any doubt, Mavic will be represented in this list with many of its highly sophisticated models. Within the French brand catalog, the new pair of cycling shoes Comete Ultimate II stand out for performing at greatest standards: shoes that have been envisioned and designed for the most demanding cyclists and the highest level competitions; in which no rider can afford to lose a single watt.

Second generation

The first generation of Comete Ultimate came out in the market as something never seen before. Their look was radical, they presented huge innovations, and they introduced a price much higher than their closest competitors. What cannot be refuted is the new revolutionary step that Mavic took by introducing those shoes into the market.

This new edition, as well as its predecessor, is composed of an evolved carbon shell and an inner boot that acts as an interface between the foot and the shoe, providing more comfort and better adjustment thanks to a new design.

One of the improvements which we believe that stands out is the evolution of the ventilation of the shoe, including more apertures on the sides and the sole of the shell. The second generation maintains its lightness as one of its strong features, with just 210 grams. Intermediate sizes have been introduced in order to guarantee a wider range of possibilities in order to precisely fit everybody’s feet. Something we could not forget is their new price (700 €), which in spite of it still being high, represents an important reduction with respect to its predecessor.

Energy Shell Carbon

It is easy to imagine the enormous effort and R&D work that Mavic has put into the exterior shell (baptized as Energy Shell Carbon) in order to achieve the final result.

Mavic guarantees that the technology they put into the development and fabrication of this part of the shoe allows a force transmission towards the pedal without any precedents, and all of that thanks to a superior stiffness combined with a minimum stack height (distance between the pedal and the foot of just 4.5 mm), which also improves the pedaling biomechanics.

As you extract the inner boot and closely examine the details and the finishing touches that compose the carbon piece, it is outstanding to observe Mavic’s finish. Moreover, by inspecting the bare shoe, we will be able to notice first hand the stiffness and lightness offered by the futuristic Comete Ultimate II exoskeleton.

The ensemble is complemented by a system of Ergo dials, characteristic from the brand, which fixes the boot with high precision and tightness to the foot.

Greater comfort, better finish

Regarding the inner boot, several improvements have been added. Mavic has substituted the inner fabric for a more pleasant one that provides more comfort, and they have enhanced the fabric pattern to ensure a better adjustment to the feet. In addition to that, the rubber pads have been smoothed out without losing any grip thanks to the patented Matryx technology, which employs carbon filament for better flexibility and breathability.

Mavic promises that they were able to introduce all of these changes without increasing the weight or compromising the performance.

Conclusions

We have been testing the Comete Ultimate II for a while, and we have been able to experience all of the aforementioned details in person.

The fashion in which the force is transmitted in each pedal stroke is astonishing, and the foot adjustment alongside the shoe’s stiffness feel as if you had been soldered to the bicycle.

On the other side, if you happen to have a slightly wider foot or some size differences between feet, you might not get the freedom that more ‘conventional’ cycling shoes provide due to the rigid carbon shell, which might induce some discomfort if the right size is not selected.

There are no color options. We understand Mavic’s decision in leaving the carbon at sight since it results in very attractive, but at the same time, we also miss being able to choose between two or three colors.

With no doubt, we are in front of a cycling shoe designed for competition or for those who want to experience top-level cycling. In the case of being one of these two profiles, the price, taking into account the fabrication and the employed materials as well as the provided performance, will be completely sidelined when purchasing the shoes that you will be using for the next seasons.
