Y llegó el turno del veterano: El 5º Criterium Gijón

Muchos teníamos marcado en rojo el 22 de Agosto, fecha en la que teníamos una cita en la Escuela de Marina de Gijón, mismo lugar que hace un año y mas ganas que nunca de recorrer el rápido y técnico trazado del critérium Asturiano, el cual se ha convertido por méritos propios, en el de mas solera del panorama nacional.

El día previo a la carrera tuvo lugar la ya tradicional fiesta de bienvenida, un evento que se convierte en pre-party para algunos y en toma de contacto con el evento para equipos y riders; excepto para los primeros, era un día para descansar, ladies & gentlemen, ¡mañana hay carrera!

Sábado 22, las predicciones meteorológicas ya lo auguraban, el cielo de Gijón amaneció gris y la idea de volver a correr en suelo mojado cogía fuerza (una vez más)… Mientras acabábamos de instalarnos en el parc fermé para los equipos, la lluvia hizo aparición. Quedaba escasa media hora para el inicio del calentamiento de la primera prueba.

A las cuatro de la tarde daba inicio la carrera de chicas, 12 vueltas al trazado de 1,6 kms donde demostraron un nivel altísimo y nos ofrecieron un espectáculo a la misma altura. En esta categoría, tras una llegada al sprint, Ainara Elbusto subió como ya va siendo una costumbre a lo más alto del cajón, tras liderar junto con Fleur Faure la carrera casi desde inicio. La tercera posición fue para Stefania Baldi que, tras una última vuelta mano a mano con Mariela Farabello, consiguió plaza en el pódium.

Dos horas mas tarde llegó el turno de los chicos, en este caso, 20 vueltas iban a decidir quien era el más rápido sobre el asfalto.

La carrera se dividió en un pelotón y en un exigente grupo de cabeza, donde corredores de renombre acabarían disputando la carrera como las chicas, en un sprint donde tampoco extrañó ver a Mario Paz Duque imponerse con autoridad.

Viendo los pódiums de ambas categorías resulta fácil entender porque el Criterium Gijón goza de buena salud y está más que consolidado en el calendario de critériums nacional.

Las sensaciones durante el fin de semana por parte del RAW Santafixie Team han sido muy buenas, tanto Oriol como Toni finalizaron la carrera con buen feeling y con ganas de más, así que el Criterium Gijón ha sido toda una inyección de motivación para ser más ambiciosos en las próximas citas.

Por último, no podemos dejar de hacernos eco de la after party, que esta vez tuvo lugar en Cimadevilla, pleno centro histórico, donde algunos compiten también a un alto nivel y donde la sidra tiene cada año un gran protagonismo.

Many of us had marked in red the 22_nd of August, the date on that we had an appointment at Escuela de Marina, in Gijón, same place that a year ago and looking forward to riding the fast and technical path of the Asturian’s criterium, which has become on its own merits, in the more traditional Criterium on the national scene.

The day before the race was held the traditional welcome party, an event that becomes in pre-party for some and in making contact with the event for teams and riders; except for the first time people, it was a day for relaxing, ladies & gentlemen, the race is tomorrow!

Saturday 22_nd, weather predictions already predicted it, Gijon sky dawned grey and the idea of riding in wet floor picked force (once again)… While we just settle in the parc fermé for the teams, the rain came out, only half an hour before the first warm-up begins.

At four o’clock in the afternoon the women’s race started, 12 laps, 1.6 km of path where they showed a very high level and offered us a great spectacle. In this category, Ainara Elbusto together with Fleur Faure leaded the race since the beginning and after a spectacular sprint the spanish crossed the finish line first, as usual recently, then Fleur. The third place was for Stefania Baldi who, after a last round hand in hand with Mariela Farabello, got the third place on the podium.

Two hours later came the turn of the men category, in this case, 20 laps will decide who will be the fastest on the asphalt.

The race was divided in a bunch and a tough head group, where renowned riders would disputing the race as the women, in a sprint where it didn’t surprise us to see Mario Paz Duque easily win out.

Seeing the podiums of both categories, it is easy to understand why the Gijon’s criterium is one of the more consolidated Crits in the national Criterium calendar.

The RAW Santafixie Team’s felt happy and proud of what they did; Toni and Oriol both finished the race with very good feelings and wanting for more, so the Criterium Gijon has been a boost of motivation to be more ambitious in future appointments like this.

Finally, we can’t forget the after party, which this time took place in Cimadevilla, the historic center, where some of them raced high level as well and where cider has each year a high prominence.
